Farriery is currently undergoing a major evolution with the emergence of new technological solutions aimed at improving both work efficiency and horse welfare. Traditional shoeing methods, which typically last between two and three hours and often rely on hot shoeing, can cause stress and discomfort for the animal. To address these limitations, Orion Horse Shoes is developing an innovative approach: custom-made horseshoes, cold-fitted in just 30 minutes, thanks to the use of modern materials and high-precision digital measurement tools.
At the heart of the project is the creation of an innovative algorithm, integrated into a mobile application, capable of quickly and accurately measuring hooves. Through a hybrid approach combining real-time video and LiDAR, the application analyzes hoof shape in seconds without prolonged contact or discomfort for the animal. The major innovation lies in its ability to automatically detect the ‘white line,’ a key area of the hoof essential for optimal shoe adjustment and injury prevention. This detection, which is absent in current solutions, also allows for early identification of certain pathologies.
The measurements obtained are used to manufacture shoes perfectly adapted to each horse, improving comfort, performance, and long-term health. For farriers, this technology represents a significant time-saver, a reduction in manufacturing errors, and a substantial increase in productivity. It integrates easily into their daily practices thanks to simple guidance and real-time feedback provided by the application.
